Lagos State Is Moving On As Gov. Fashola Commissions Six Major Projects In One Day

Feb 4, 2010 - Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Thursday commissioned six different projects in various spheres like housing, healthcare, potable water and transportation with a promise that things can only get better for the residents of Lagos.

Speaking during the handing over of the 256 units of twin two and one bedroom flats in Igbogbo IIA to the people, Governor Fashola promised that government would soon unfold a mortgage scheme which would allow people who pay a 30 percent deposit for a home to own it by paying over some years.

Governor Fashola stated that the present administration would also ensure that everybody who lives in Lagos would be able to afford a home. "We want to create a new class of home owners in Lagos State", he said.

The Governor said he will ensure that only those who intend to live in the homes benefit from the scheme by preventing profiteers and speculators from abusing the scheme by buying and reselling.

The Lagos State Governor said the Igbogbo scheme which is also equipped with a Police Post would serve as a model of such buildings across Lagos, adding that the Police Post would also help to bring the law enforcement agents closer to the people as it has helped achieved in several overseas countries.

The Lagos State helmsman said the Igbogbo housing scheme is a vote of confidence for Nigeria’s local contractors as the houses were built 100 per cent by them.

At the handing over of the Maternal and Child Care Centre (MCC) in Ikorodu, the Governor said three out of the eight MCC have been completed in Isolo, Ifako Ijaiye and Ikorodu .

According to the Governor, the State is blazing the trail of hope which it intends to keep alive. At no time has public service come under close scrutiny as it is being done now when much is being expected from health care givers,he said.

Governor Fashola prayed that the Maternal and Childcare Centre would be a port of safe harbour for the women and sanctuary to take care of the fruits of their womb.

At the commissioning of the Micro Water Works in Isawo, Ikorodu, Governor Fashola urged the people to make good use of the 270,000 litres capacity per day water works and protect it against abuse and vandalism.

Governor Fashola who also commissioned the Ikorodu Shopping Complex, said the handover is a fulfilment of one of the promises made by him before his election, adding that Government is determined to ensure that traders are protected from avoidable harms that come with street trading, adding that various market projects are at various stages of completion like in Oluwole, Oyingbo, Adeniran Ogunsanya and Tejuosho in the State.

The Governor commended the vision of the six Local Ikorodu Local Councils for their tenacity in completing the project started by their predecessors in office years back.

At the commissioning of the Drivers Institute at Ikorodu , Governor Fashola urged all Lagosians to embrace the facility as it will help to test individual vision which may need improvement adding that the Government is irrevocably committed to ensuring that traffic moves unhindered in all parts of the state.

Speaking with Correspondents after the tour, Governor Fashola reaffirmed the commitment of his administration to give Lagos the highest standard of infrastructure for the benefit of the people.

He said: "We have passed our learning period, we had our teething problems in the beginning, we set the highest standards, we improved on project planning which was very critical and opened our minds to new ways of doing things".

Responding to a question on the projects inspected, Governor Fashola said, "From what you have seen today, from the housing estate in Igbogbo to water facilities here and to the other projects, you will see an improvement, particularly in the Driving Institute and the Maternal and Child Care Centre, you will see the quality and that is where we are going. We keep doing it better because this is what our people deserve".

The Governor was accompanied on the tour by members of the State Executive Council, traditional rulers and an appreciative crowd of residents at each of the venues.
