AMUWO ODOFIN IMMUNISES 1.2M CHILDREN AND SPLASHES OVER N4 MILLION ON G. C. E.

At least 1,23,000 children have been immunised against the polio virus in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State between January and March this year.
Chairman of the Local Government, Comrade Ayodele Adewale, disclosed this during the flag off of the third round of the 2009 National Immunisation Plus Days at the council’s secretariat recently.

Comrade Ayodele Adewale, the Executive Chairman of Amuwo Odofin Area of Lagos State has taken another steady stride in repositioning the students residing in the area for a better future academically, by splashing over N4million on the students preparing to write this year's General Certificate Examination in the area.
It would be recalled that the council boss spent over N3 Million on the students in Amuwo Odofin who partook in the last U.M.E exercise which held nation wide in April, 2009.

Lagos Warns Churches, Mosques Over Noise.

Worried by the unabated blaring of external loud speakers in churches and mosques across the state, the Lagos state government says it will soon begin prosecution of churches and mosques that violate the state’s environmental laws.
The government views this incessant blaring of external loud speakers by these religious bodies as nuisance to the society and vows to stop it. At a meeting with religious bodies in the state, the General Manager, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Mr. Rasheed Shabi, frowned at the noise pollution going on in churches, mosques and among record vendors. He said government would no longer tolerate this, adding that it would soon swing into action to sanction such erring churches and mosques. According to Shabi, the situation of religious worship centres within residential areas contravenes the state’s physical planning laws and regulations.

This was made known by the legislative arm of the Lagos Island Local Government during a public hearing on environment sanitation and parking/traffic control bill which was held at the council’s secretariat.
The House Leader of the council, Hon. Makanjuola Adisasheu, stated that it was necessary to effect changes through an amendment and review of the environmental sanitation and traffic/parking bye-laws of the local government to ensure proper implementation of the law. He added that strict compliance with the laws will promote and enhance development in the area.
The lawmakers added that the law would include proper implementation of the monthly and weekly environmental sanitation exercise, prevention of flood, prevention of diseases such as malaria, fever, cholera etc., promotion of good health and the creation of a cleaner environment.
The traffic and parking bill, Makanjuola said, would cover driving against traffic (which attracts a fine of N25,000), illegal parking, abandoned vehicles on the road and some other traffic and parking laws that are meant to sanitize the traffic situation within the council area.
He stated that ignorance will not be an excuse, urging market leaders, labor union leaders and CDA leaders to pass on the message, because the government come down hard on offenders.
“Information is very important. When we talk about information, it is for the people to know about what we are doing. That is why we invited the market leaders, union leaders and CDA chairmen. These are people that are closer to the people.

Fashola insists on State police.

Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has reiterated his call for State Police as a veritable way of addressing security problem across the country.
The governor also insisted that the state deserves a special status, in view of its pivotal role in the revenue generation of the country.
Fashola said special allocation from the federation account and provision of infrastructure, as well as effective security arrangement, are part of the unique needs of Lagos.
According to him, these provisions would enhance the development of the state, and the well-being of Nigerians from different backgrounds living in Lagos.
Fashola made the call at a world press conference at Lagos House, Ikeja, at the weekend, which was convened to commemorate 10 years of democracy in Nigeria and the two years celebration of his administration.
The governor reasoned that Lagos, as the economic nerve-centre of the country, with the most strategic seaports and airport, deserves a special status.

Onigbongbo LCDA Picks 12 Kids For South Africa Tour

Twelve lucky kids, picked from the Onigbongbo Tennis Academy, are to embark on a training tour of South Africa, next month.
The young boys and girls, who emerged from the Catch-Em-Young initiative of the Onigbongbo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), were unveiled at an official launch of the Academy, at the Officers’ Mess Tennis Court, Military Cantonment, Ikeja, yesterday. The Nwabueze sisters, Alima, 9 and 8-year-old Mariam, nicknamed the ‘Williams Sisters’ due to their style of dressing and play, led the team that will depart for South Africa on 5 June, 2009. Some of the children who made the team under coach James Makafan are Seun Owolabi, Victor Akinpelu, Audu Akpan, Ayo Ajayi and Oyebade Damilola.
Chairman of Onigbongbo LCDA, Hon. Idowu Obasa, told P.M.Sports that his council created the academy to provide an enabling environment for the less privileged but talented youths to develop themselves in tennis. “These young tennis players were selected from our Council’s pet project, which will produce world class tennis players for Lagos state and Nigeria in the near future. “They will undergo special training under our coaches and those of the South Africa Tennis Federation from next week. Our target is to ensure that the kids get scholarship to play international tennis side by side their educational pursuit,” Obasa said.
The politician said his council will continue with the empowerment of youths in its domain, assuring the parents of the selected primary school pupils of their safety and expressed optimism that their trip to South Africa will be a huge success. Brigadier-General Johnson Ochoga, who chaired the event, gave kudos to Onigbongbo for the youth tennis initiative and urged the kids to make the best use of the opportunity. The launch of the academy coincided with the Children’s Day celebrations marked across the world yesterday. Children from nine primary schools in Ikeja attended the launch.
