Lagos begins distribution of ID cards to pupils
Kunle Awosiyan, Lagos - 25.05.2009
THE Lagos State government, at the weekend, commenced the presentation of identification cards to pupils of public and private schools in the state. The deputy governor of the state, Mrs. Sarah Adebisi Sosan, said the cards remained a legal identity for pupils in the state.
At the presentation of the cards to Senior Secondary School Three (SSS 3) students in the state, Sosan said the system would help to give the children a sense of belonging.
Sosan said the ID cards provided the pupils opportunity to get assistance from schools, without which they might lose benefits from the government.
According to her, the system contained the overall data of all pupils in both public and private schools in the state, adding that “each pupil is assigned a unique Student Personal Identification Number (SPIN).”
She said the web-based LASGEMS version, when fully operational, would allow schools in the state to access information on their pupils through the internet.
The deputy governor, however, said pupils from private schools would pay N500 for digital imaging services provided by consultants.
